Predators

When sheep and cattle are grazing, they are vulnerable to predators, such as bears, coyotes, cougars, and wolves. Each year, ranchers lose an average of 10% of their livestock to predators. The re-introduction of wolves into Idaho in the mid-1990s has led ranchers to look for more environmentally sensitive means of predator control. Wolves are listed as endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. Since 1995, wolves have taken about 300 cattle and 800 sheep in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Consequently, ranchers have begun using more guard dogs to protect their sheep and cattle.
